There is no question that pregnancy affects and changes the condition of your skin. This is because of changes to hormones and blood flow. Thankfully there are many quality products with specific ingredients that can help eliminate or greatly reduce the impact of pregnancy on your skin.

Body Acne & Blemishes

An increase in the hormone androgen can cause the glands in your skin to produce more sebum (oil), which in turn will make your skin feel greasier and increases the appearance of acne. Women typically experience their worst breakouts during the first trimester of pregnancy.

  • Salicylic acid (less than 2% concentration is recommended)
  • Glycolic acid

    Increased Pigmentation

    Pregnancy affects the colour of your skin and is a very common condition with pregnant women. This is especially prevalent in women with darker skin tones. Changes in pigmentation is due to increased levels of oestrogen, progesterone and other hormones that stimulate pigment cells.

    To reduce pigmentation while pregnant, look for these ingredients in products:

    • Vitamin C
    • Glycolic Acid
    • Kojic Acid

Another method to decrease pigmentation is to reduce your time in the sun.

Itchiness

Generally, one fifth of pregnant women experience itchy skin. A common cause is because pregnancy exacerbates an underlying skin disorder, such as eczema or psoriasis.

To minimize or eliminate itchiness, look for these ingredients in products:

  • Allantoin
  • Glycerine
  • Niacinamide
  • Shea Butter

  • Wear loose clothing
  • Wear clothing made of natural fibres and are more breathable

Stretch Marks

The most common skin condition for pregnant women is stretch marks, with over 90% reporting this condition.

To manage stretch marks, look for these ingredients in products:

  • Rosehip oil
  • Vitamin E
  • Wheat germ oil
  • Almond oil
